Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
- Identify sources of lead poisoning
- Describe lead toxicology
- Determine who is at the greatest risk for getting lead poisoning and why
- Discuss how lead poisoning affects children
- Describe the testing and case management processes
- Identify ways to prevent lead poisoning
Topics and Educational Content
The course discusses the history, consequences, risk factors, ways to avoid, symptoms, and treatments for lead poisoning. The course includes these modules:

How to Take the Course
There is a fee of $55.00 to take the course. Once you have enrolled with OU, you will have access to the content of the course for 90 days from the date of your enrollment. During that time you will have two opportunities to pass the post-assessment with a score of 80% or better. If you pass the assessment you will receive 2.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.
If you do not pass the assessment, to receive credit you will have to re-register with OU and pay the $55.00 fee. This will entitle you to another 90 days access to the content of the course, and two more opportunities to pass the post-assessment.
To take the course you will be required to follow these steps (this is less complicated than it may seem):
- Register in the OU CPM Learning Management System (LMS). Click the link below or use the URL: http://oklms.org to access the LMS. Register by following these steps:
- Click New User Registration.
- Click Continue.
- Click I am interested in Continuing Medical Education Credits
- Fill in your personal information. You will also need to create a User ID and Password. You will use this User ID and Password each time you want to log-in to the course.
- Click Submit.
- Your LMS My Page will display. Click the Online Courses button at the top of the page.
- Your course menu will display. To take the Avoiding and Treating Lead Poisoning course click on the text with that title.
- The first time you access the course a page will display requiring an Order Code. To get an Order Code you will need to pay for the course. Click where indicated to purchase the course.
- Enroll with the College of Continuing Education. You will enroll in the course thorough the University of Oklahoma’s College of Continuing Education. The fee for this course is $55.00. You can pay by credit card, provide a purchase order, or be billed for the cost of the course. After you enroll OU CCE will provide you with an Order Code. Be sure to keep this Order Code handy. It will be required in the next step. Enroll with CCE by following these steps:
- Ensure that Lead Poisoning $55.00 has been selected in the Fee Type field.
- Click Continue.
- Ensure that Check Out has been selected.
- Click Continue.
- Fill in the required personal information.
- Click Submit.
- Select Charge My Card or Bill Me Later.
- Click Complete Registration Process.
- On the next frame you will be provided an Order Code. Write down your Order Code and keep it handy.
- Return to the LMS. You can do this in one of two ways.
- The LMS window requesting the Order Code should still be open behind the window you used to Enroll with CCE. Click in the LMS window.
- Access the LMS at http://oklms.org and log-in using your newly created User ID and Password. Click Online Courses and the title of the course as described above. The Order Code page will display.
- Complete the LMS Registration. On the LMS Order Code page, enter your Order Code and click Submit. You will have access to the course for 90 days from the day that you first access the course. To access the course in the future you will simply have to access the LMS (http://oklms.org), log-in using your User ID and Password, and click Online Courses/Avoiding and Treating Lead Poisoning. The course will remember where you left off so you can start there or at the beginning.
- Take the Pre-Assessment. The first time you access the course you will be required to complete a pre-assessment. This is to measure your knowledge of the topic before you take the course. Don’t worry about your score.
- Review the content. You will have 90 days from the day that you first access the course to review the content in the seven modules. You can also print a list of sources for each module to continue your research into lead poisoning. Even after you have passed the post-assessment you can access the content as a reference for the complete 90 days.
- Take the Post-Assessment. You will have two chances to pass the post-assessment. To receive the CMEs offered for this course you must pass the post-assessment with a score of 80%. If you don’t pass the first time you should review the course again, before taking the post-assessment a second time. If you do not pass the post-assessment the second time, you will be required to re-enroll with the College of Continuing Education for another 90 days access and two more chances to pass the post-assessment.
- Complete Online Evaluation. After you have passed the post-assessment you must complete a brief evaluation that provides your opinion of the course and the content provided.
- Print Your Certificate. After completing the evaluation you will have a chance to print a certificate that shows you have completed the course – Avoiding and Treating Lead Poisoning. You should keep this certificate as proof for your CMEs.
